Infant and Toddler Program

Picture
Infant Program Curriculum: Our infants are 6 weeks - 18 months. We have a 1:3 ratio for teachers to children. The curriculum in our infant program is to build up the child's self-esteem. We tend to the child right away when they cry and speak to them in a respectful manner the way we would like to be spoken to. We use baby sign language with our infants so that they can communicate to us before they are verbal. Each day, your child will read books, sing songs, explore sensorially, and all of your child's basic, social, and emotional needs will be tended to.
Toddler Program Curriculum: Our toddlers are 18 months - 3 years. We have a 1:5 ratio for teachers to children. The curriculum in our toddler program is independence and concentration. Now that your child's self-esteem and trust in caregivers is built up, they are able to confidently work independently for longer periods of time without interruption. Discipline is taught through positive reinforcement and turn-taking. Our toddlers choose their own jobs during work cycle and then join together for circle time each morning.

Preschool Program

At Strode Montessori, our preschoolers are in a multi-age grouping of 3-6 year olds. Strode Montessori’s program provides a rigorous education that is carefully designed to meet each child’s individual needs. We ignite the child’s sense of wonder and curiosity in order to create a passion for learning. In addition to our academic curriculum, we provide an education that teaches to the child as a whole. We strive to provide learning opportunities that allow the child to understand their unique purpose and relationship to the world around them. Please see below for more specific objectives for each of our subjects:

Practical Life

Refines the child’s senses of order, concentration, coordination, and independence by developing fine and gross motor skills. This is done by practicing life skills such as pouring water, buttoning a button, and using a ratchet to unscrew a bolt. The practical life activities, or “jobs”, are divided into the following categories: care of self, care of the environment, grace and courtesy, and control of movement.

Sensorial Life

Develops the five senses in order to discriminate sizes, textures, smells, tastes, noises and colors. These skills develop the concrete understanding necessary for math, language, art, cosmic, and music. Sensorial materials include sorting by height or width, sorting by color, and matching sound cylinders. Each material isolates one specific sense, allowing the child to concentrate on slight differences in the materials in order to match or sort them.

Language

Allows children to make meaningful connections to sound and symbols using the sandpaper letters. Children are introduced to the sound of the letters first, then the name of them, while tracing the sandpaper letters in order to develop an understanding of the sound-symbol correspondence. Children then move on to the movable alphabet, where they can use wooden letters to create words. The language area also gives children the chance to refine their fine-motor skills by tracing with the metal insets in order to develop the skills necessary to write.

Mathematics

Provides a deep understanding of mathematical concepts building from the concrete foundations from the sensorial materials, moving to more abstract ideas. Our math lessons and materials use manipulatives that allow the children to see, feel, and experience mathematical concepts such as quantities, numerals and mathematical operations.

Cosmic

Provides geography, history, and science lessons as well as peace education. Geography lessons give children a sense of place as they learn about how they relate to their family, school, community, state, country, world, and universe. History lessons provide an understanding of the passing of time as it relates to our universe, our planet, our country, state, community, family, and self. Science lessons give children the opportunity to explore and classify animals and plants. Children also participate in experiments that introduce the concepts of gravity, light, magnetism, and simple machines. We also provide peace education in all areas of the classroom by developing respect of ourselves, our environment, and others, as well as teaching positive and peaceful communication skills.

Art

Provides children the opportunity to create artwork using skills learned in the practical life area. Teachers provide lessons on furthering artistic skills such as understanding the color wheel in order to make new colors, shading, cutting paper with scissors, and using different mediums to allow the children to participate in academic projects as well as spontaneous, inspired artwork.

Music and Movement

Allows children to express themselves through music and movement as well as making a meaningful connection to their brain and their body. Children also develop a sense of rhythm, order and sequence used for reading and writing skills.
