Refines the child’s senses of order, concentration, coordination, and independence by developing fine and gross motor skills. This is done by practicing life skills such as pouring water, buttoning a button, and using a ratchet to unscrew a bolt. The practical life activities, or “jobs”, are divided into the following categories: care of self, care of the environment, grace and courtesy, and control of movement.

Develops the five senses in order to discriminate sizes, textures, smells, tastes, noises and colors. These skills develop the concrete understanding necessary for math, language, art, cosmic, and music. Sensorial materials include sorting by height or width, sorting by color, and matching sound cylinders. Each material isolates one specific sense, allowing the child to concentrate on slight differences in the materials in order to match or sort them.

Allows children to make meaningful connections to sound and symbols using the sandpaper letters. Children are introduced to the sound of the letters first, then the name of them, while tracing the sandpaper letters in order to develop an understanding of the sound-symbol correspondence. Children then move on to the movable alphabet, where they can use wooden letters to create words. The language area also gives children the chance to refine their fine-motor skills by tracing with the metal insets in order to develop the skills necessary to write.

Provides a deep understanding of mathematical concepts building from the concrete foundations from the sensorial materials, moving to more abstract ideas. Our math lessons and materials use manipulatives that allow the children to see, feel, and experience mathematical concepts such as quantities, numerals and mathematical operations.

Provides children the opportunity to create artwork using skills learned in the practical life area. Teachers provide lessons on furthering artistic skills such as understanding the color wheel in order to make new colors, shading, cutting paper with scissors, and using different mediums to allow the children to participate in academic projects as well as spontaneous, inspired artwork.

Allows children to express themselves through music and movement as well as making a meaningful connection to their brain and their body. Children also develop a sense of rhythm, order and sequence used for reading and writing skills.
